The Potty Mouth Case

Three swear words could land Chandler woman in jail

While standing in her house, 71-year-old Miriam Ingram yelled “___ you ___! ___ you!” to her neighbors last July. It was over a long-standing dispute with her neighbor over smoking.

Ingram’s neighbors recorded her yelling and then called the police.

Bodycam footage shows a Chandler police officer talking with Ingram about what happened.

In the police report, the officer wrote: “When I told her that I had a recording of her yelling ‘___ you ___! ___ you!’ She said that she yelled that from her back door into her own backyard. I told her that she could not yell that at her neighbor from her backyard.”

Ingram is now charged with disorderly conduct.

According to Arizona law, “a person commits disorderly conduct if, with intent to disturb the peace or quiet of a neighborhood, family or person, or with knowledge of doing so, such person.”

Ingram’s attorney Marc Victor filed a motion to dismiss the charge and says this is a first amendment issue.

“It may be offensive speech but offensive speech is protected,” said Victor. “This case presents the question is it a crime to swear at another person and the answer is — not in a free society.”

Victor says there are times when certain words aren’t protected but that’s not in Ingram’s case.

Attorneys for Freedom law firm represented a family member in a serious felony case that went to trial. The family member was facing possible decades in prison if convicted of the false allegations. While the family member was innocent of all the charges leveled against him, we used the expertise of veteran lawyers at Attorneys for Freedom to lead the way through the intricacies of the court system. After weeks of trial, he was found NOT GUILTY.
Joey Hamby and Andy Marcantel did an outstanding job in not only representing the family member in court but also researching all aspects of the case prior to trial. These two experienced trials tested lawyers spent hours with us in preparation to make sure they had all the facts in the case to defend the family member in the best possible way. Those hours paid off from not only working to select the best jurors possible and arranging the correct witnesses to testify on my son's behalf but also defending his rights before the judge and making a solid defense in front of the jury. We want to thank Joey and Andy for walking with us through this horrible ordeal and being at our side every step of the way.
In a serious felony case like this one, you want the best representation possible. We selected the absolute best in Attorneys for Freedom!

Joey Hamby is your Attorney! I felt supported and understood with him in my corner. His guidance and expertise made a difficult subject clear to a jury which led to a NOT GUILTY verdict. Equally, Andy Marcantel will fight for you as well and is a great Attorney. He was an amazing advocate for me who fought hard for the truth! I could not have navigated the system without them, and I recommend Attorney's for Freedom to anyone who's freedom is on the line... you'll be glad you did!
Response from the owner:We appreciate your kind words. Our attorneys are committed excellence in every case. Andy and Joey were honored to represent you!
